I started off P90x using resistance bands. They were cheap, portable, and light. I quickly realized that I wanted to work towards bulking up and increasing mass instead of going for leaner and more toned muscles. So, I went out to buy a pair of 20 pound dumbbells. They were working great- at first.
The problem was that I wasn’t going to be lifting 20 pounds for long. With p90x, your strength increases almost weekly, so you need to increment weight that you lift accordingly. After 2 weeks I had to go buy another pair- 25 pounds.
Also, different exercises require different weights. I could easily do curls with 20 pounds, but I could barely do 2 pours before breaking form. I had to buy another pair- 15 pounds. It was becoming a real hassle and all the dumbbells took up a lot of space.
Fortunately, I heard about and tried out a pair of Bowflex selecttech dumbbells.

There is only one pair, but these dumbbells are a whole set in one. It’s like having 15 pairs of dumbbells! That’s because they work with adjustable weight plates that you choose with the turn of a dial. It’s almost like a mini-barbell bar, but switching weights is MUCH easier.
As you can see from the picture above, the weights sit aligned, and when you set down the dumbbell, the turn of the dial is what determines how many weight plates will be added when you lift up.

Final Opinion:
Although they are a bit pricey, these dumbbells are definitely worth it. They take away all the hassle and space of regular dumbbells and make a convenient and satisfying workout. I would put this in the “full experience” pile. If you are looking for all of your p90x weight equipment to be taken care of with one single product, these are your dumbbells.

The official Bowflex site lists a pair for $399. This is not bad, these usually sell on there for $549.

If you want EVEN MORE weight, you can try out the Bowflex selectech 1090 dumbbells
They are like the 552s, but they can go up to 90 pounds each, and they increase only in 5 pound increments. These cost more, but if you plan on lifting more than 50 pounds at some point, then this is probably a better option in the long-run.
